The English Garden and its surroundings
From 1850 onwards, the demolition of the fortifications brought major changes to Geneva’s landscape. The creation of the Jardin Anglais is closely tied to the construction of the Hôtel de la Métropole, which initially made it a private garden. Throughout the 19th century, several redevelopment projects transformed it into a leisure space for visitors, adding a decorative fountain, a bandstand, refreshment kiosks, the national monument, a meteorological column, and an alpine garden.
